To be dragged kicking across a cylindrical landscape...

Most science fiction which deals with "first contact" seems to treat the subject two ways: either with benevolant aliens, come to teach the world something, or malevolant aliens, come to do something rather nasty to humanity. The first book in the Rama series provides a nice third possibility: none of the above.

Moreso than scientific speculation or an attempt to paint the world in detail decades from now, Clark simply breaks it down to a few simple elements: the planets of our solar system have been colonized to a certain extent, space flight is a common-place thing, and whammo... an alien craft piles through.

The achievement of this novel is not what it says outright about the craft, rather it is the curiosity it inspires. Just enough is told regarding the discoveries made about the visitor to compel a person to create a picture of things on their own. This may be frustraiting for some, which will then inspire one to press on and read the remainder of the series.

More than the story, the possibilities of imagination opened up by this tale is the thing that make it worth the few hours it requires to get through it.
